and no, irony is not lost on me.
one warm day about three and a half weeks ago, i came home from getting a haircut to a really hot apartment. this is not the kind of temperature reception when you come home to an air conditioned (or so i thought) condo. i looked at the thermostat and the air conditioner (from here on out to be referred to as the A/C) was on and set to a comfortable 76 degrees. unfortunately, the actual temperature in the condo was 84. i put my had under a vent and felt lukewarm air. not good. not good at all.
fast forward to the present (remember, three and a half weeks), and still no A/C to speak of to keep the place cool.
first, there was a warranty issue on the unit. turns out the first diagnosis was i needed a new compressor. might as well have been a new flux capacitor for all i know about A/C units.
turns out the manufacturer never got written documentation about when to start the warranty (you know those goofey postcard things no one EVER sends back?), so they went by the sale date of the unit. Turns out that was sometime in May, 2002. Turns out it was a five year warranty. Turns out that I have my problem in June 2007. TWO WEEKS after the damn warranty runs out.
have to say, the manufacturer were very cool about the situation and worked out a deal to kick in the warranty on my closing date of the condo (september 2002). fantastic. couldn't be happier. let's order up the part and get this baby replaced!
two weeks later, we finally get the part delivered to my HVAC repair place... and it's the WRONG part (took two weeks to deliver the wrong part. thanks). so they arrange to deliver the right part the next morning. so let me get this right... it takes TWO weeks to deliver the wrong part, but you can have the right one delivered overnight? odd.
so after all that, the right part arrives, gets installed, and still no good A/C. only thing left, get a new unit. at this point, a second opinion probably would have been the prudent thing, but i'm so beaten down after the whole ordeal, i say do it. i want to get a good night's sleep for cryin' out loud.
so tonight i have a brand spankin' new A/C unit installed up on the roof. and yet, i still have no working A/C. i believe in karma, and i'm not sure what it is that i did to deserve this, but man am i paying for SOMETHING (figuratively & literally).
there was a day when there was no such thing as A/C. people survived. i get it. but dammit, three weeks of no A/C after a lifetime of being used to it... i don't care what it takes... I WANT MY A/C.
